Chronic liver disease – the role of glutathione
Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant and protects the body from various diseases. Performs multiple functions to avoid the body to develop disease and also helps detoxify chemicals and drugs.

Studies suggest that increased levels of glutathione helps improve interferon treatment response in cases of hepatitis. It was confirmed that oxidative stress in patients with chronic hepatitis and studies also showed that levels of free radicals are correlated with the activity of hepatitis.
In another study conducted in Italy, improving glutathione levels with high doses intravenous in patients with fatty liver secondary to alcoholic hepatitis or viral hepatitis (B or C) were marked to show improvement in liver function tests, which lasted for several months, after the GSH treatment.
It was found that there was a presence of free radicals due to oxidation of lipids in patients with alcoholic liver disease. It is therefore concluded that oxidative stress contributes to the deterioration of liver disease.
Studies made clear that:
* Oxygen free radicals and other toxic, resulting in oxidative stress, produced in chronic liver disease, which contribute to liver damage in several common types of chronic hepatitis.
* The levels of antioxidants in the blood and liver, especially those of L-glutathione, are found lower in these patients compared with others.
* Thirdly, the increased levels of L-glutathione has been shown to improve cell damage liver which is reflected in liver function tests normal. In chronic hepatitis C, increase of glutathione not only affects HCV replication, but also makes therapy with interferon anti-viral drugs to be more effective.
Studies suggest that the future of Therapy for chronic hepatitis C are likely to include measures to reduce oxidative stress and injury, and the use of multiple drug combinations, including inhibitors of the hepatitis virus C.
