The power of antioxidants
Our bodies are designed to take care of themselves. There are systems in its interior to provide nutrients and to excrete toxins. Antioxidants play an important role in eliminating these toxins from our body. Since they are so important in our hazardous waste disposal, it is vital we have some knowledge of what antioxidants are, how they work and what kinds of foods and dietary supplements can provide health benefits.
Antioxidants are a group of enzymes, vitamins and minerals that work to protect our bodies from free radical formation. Free radicals are atoms in the body or groups of atoms that cause cellular damage that impairs the immune system. Free radicals can be formed in a number of different ways. They can be caused by any number of bodily functions, including the process of breaking down fat cells into usable energy.
To explain this, our bodies are similar to a car. Everyone needs the right fuel to perform at their peak. But like the engines in our cars, our bodies do not burn fuel efficiently. This results in poor conversion in the exhaust gas in our cars and free radicals in our body.
Generally, free radicals lack an electron because of some metabolic process. Negative atom attempts to correct itself by pulling an electron from another cell. The damage begins at that point and a chain cells pulling electrons from one another begins to form. As a result, this can lead to infections and degenerative diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. In addition, recent studies have shown that the damage caused by free radicals may be an important factor in the aging process.
Other causes are cigarette smoke (even second hand), overexposure to sunlight, the radiation exposure, and inhalation or ingestion of any pollutant common in our air, water and food chain.
Fortunately, our bodies have built a weapon against this enemy. free radical scavenger as enzymes are produced naturally in the body. Seek out and bond with free radicals. This binding neutralizes the destructive action that occurs in cells.
However, with increasing levels of toxins that we are subjected to daily, the antioxidants that the body supplies may fall short of demand. Therefore, we might think changing the diet to increase certain foods and taking nutritional supplements that provide additional antioxidants for the body to use.
As you may have read in many popular magazines, vitamins A, C and E have been found to act as antioxidants very good. Foods that provide high levels of antioxidants are fruits and vegetables especially vegetables, yellow-green. Other herbs and supplements that are used as antioxidants: alpha-lipoic acid, bilberry, chokeberry, elderberry, coenzyme Q10, cysteine, Glyconutrients, Ginkgo Biloba, glutathione, grape seed extract, green tea, pine bark extract, oligomeric proanthocyanidins, Pycnogenol, melatonin, selenium, magnesium, superoxide dismutase, beta-carotene and zinc.
