In a clinical study showed that NAC reduced the exacerbation rate, an increase in disease severity in patients with moderate to severe COPD (breathing Journal Vol 66, No. 6, 1999). 169 patients were randomized to standard treatment and the NAC 600 mg once daily or standard therapy alone for a period 6 months. The study revealed a 41% decrease in the number of exacerbations in the group treated with NAC. They also studied the number of days patients were ill. Patients in the NAC group experienced only took 82 days of illness while the patients only in the standard therapy experienced 155 days of illness. They concluded that NAC taken once daily to COPD patients was well tolerated and is likely to improve compliance with the prescribed regimen. It has been shown patients with various cancers have low levels of glutathione. In general, those with higher levels of glutathione have a lower risk of malignant tumors. Has strong neuroprotective properties. It is used in the prevention of renal failure. One study showed a 90% reduction in radiographic contrast nephropathy of NAC. One study found that NAC may prevent contrast medium-induced a dose neopropathy
dependent effect in patients treated with angioplasty primary and may improve the outcome of hospital (N. Engl). J. Med 354 (26. 2773-82) Another clinical study concluded that NAC protects patients with renal moderate chronic renal contrast-induced deterioration of renal function after coronary angiographic procedures, with minimal adverse effects and at a level low cost (JAMA 289: 553). Other studies were done to show the NAC supplementation helps improve liver and kidney function, reduce colon problems such as polyps in the colon, and improved digestive problems such as gastritis.
